While Mongolia isn\u2019t the first country that comes to mind in global diplomacy, its strategic location between Russia and China makes it a key player in regional stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;<strong>Japan and the UK just inked a $334 billion trade agreement<\/strong>\u2014a stunning boost for both economies. This comes as part of a&nbsp;<strong>Tokyo-hosted 2+2 summit<\/strong>, a first for the two nations in this format. And let\u2019s not forget that Japan, the UK, and Italy are also co-developing a&nbsp;<strong>next-generation fighter jet<\/strong>\u2014so this isn\u2019t just about trade; it\u2019s also a military partnership in the making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-trump-s-japan-problem-currency-manipulation-and-defense\"><strong>Trump\u2019s Japan Problem: Currency Manipulation and Defense<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, it was bound to happen.&nbsp;<strong>Donald Trump has turned his attention to Japan<\/strong>. He\u2019s calling out Tokyo on two fronts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Currency manipulation<\/strong>\u2014implying Japan is artificially keeping the yen weak to boost exports. This isn\u2019t a new accusation, but in this current environment, expect it to be a recurring talking point. Trade Minister\u00a0Yoji\u00a0Muto\u00a0will be dispatched quickly to attempt to address these including reciprocal and steel &amp; aluminum tariff issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defense spending<\/strong>\u2014Washington wants Japan to\u00a0<strong>spend 3% of its GDP on defense<\/strong>, rather than the 2% it committed to under Kishida\u2019s plan. Ishiba, Japan\u2019s Prime Minister, isn\u2019t budging yet, but these conversations are just beginning. Finally, on&nbsp;<strong>March 4<\/strong>, it passed the Lower House\u2014but not without drama:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>This is the first budget revision in 29 years<\/strong>, showing just how much the balance of power has shifted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s also the\u00a0<strong>first time in 70 years that government spending has been reduced<\/strong>. That\u2019s right\u2014an actual cut.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The LDP needed\u00a0<strong>13 extra votes<\/strong>, and they got\u00a0<strong>all 38 from Ishin-no-Kai<\/strong>, their newest best friend\u2026 for now.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Who voted against it?<\/strong>\u00a0The Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) and the Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP)\u2014a sign that tensions are far from over.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, this budget fight is not quite over.&nbsp;Amendments are now required&nbsp;due to&nbsp;last minute flip-flopping and the real battle is just beginning\u2026 so while the issue has moved out of the Lower House, these amendments will have to come back after the Upper House accommodates them. This means the 50 Members of the Lower House Budget Committee do NOT get to take a break (as they have after passing the Budget upstairs for the last ~30 years), but now have to stay in-committee and cross-reference what is going on in the Upper House Budget Committee.&nbsp; A very unusual and uncomfortable situation for everyone involved.&nbsp;<strong>Elections are coming, and the opposition smells blood<\/strong>. The LDP may have survived this round, but the fractures in their coalition are growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-election-watch-the-looming-double-showdown\"><strong>Election Watch: The Looming Double Showdown<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Upper House election is set for June\/July<\/strong>. No surprises there\u2014this is a normal cycle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But a\u00a0<strong>Lower House election might be coming too<\/strong>, a rare and dramatic move. This would be a high-stakes gamble for Ishiba\u2019s government.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>LDP-Komeito alliance is shaky<\/strong>. Komeito has been\u00a0<strong>rethinking its coalition with the LDP<\/strong>, and if they split, the LDP will be even weaker. And as a result, Ishin-no-kai becomes a bit more attractive as a possible replacement to Komei-to.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Abe Faction scandal<\/strong>\u00a0isn\u2019t going away. The Accountant\u2019s testimony, though behind closed doors, further reinforced how deep the corruption ran. This will\u00a0<strong>absolutely impact voter sentiment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-osaka-expo-2025-a-political-lifeline-for-ishin-no-kai\"><strong>Osaka Expo 2025: A Political Lifeline for Ishin-no-Kai?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ticket sales are\u00a0<strong>underwhelming<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Governor Yoshimura is scrambling<\/strong>\u00a0for ways to generate buzz. Please don\u2019t forget that he is also the new leader of Ishin-no-kai.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ishin-no-Kai is counting on the Expo<\/strong>\u00a0as a key campaign asset\u2014if it flops, it could hurt them in the elections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trump might visit<\/strong>, but that\u2019s still uncertain.
